Julian Rachlin was born in Lithuania in 1973, however his parents emigrated to Austria in 1978 and it was in Vienna that he grew up, studying music with Boris Kuschnir and Pinchas Zukerman. A gifted child, he won the “Young Musician of the Year” award at the 1988 Eurovision competition, and became the youngest soloist ever to play with the Vienna Philharmonic when he made his debut under the baton of Riccardo Muti at the age of fourteen.
Following Mariss Jansons’ advice, Julian Rachlin also studied orchestral conducting, and quickly began pursuing a dual career as a violinist and conductor. He is currently a principal guest conductor with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a violinist, Julian Rachlin has established himself as one of the most accomplished artists on the international scene, making many recordings throughout his career that have all received unanimous acclaim from critics. A renowned soloist, he is also a teacher at the Vienna Conservatory where he has taught violin since September 1999.
Julian Rachlin plays a Stradivarius from 1704 and a Lorenzo Storioni viola.
